Medium Stature Desert Landscape Trees
Acacia smallii, 'AZT' Sweet Acacia
Historically, seed grown Sweet Acacia have exhibited high variability of critical horticultural characteristics. Some common variations, like canopy and leaf density, bark texture, and flowering have little impact on tree longevity or durability. Wide and significant differences in cold hardiness, from tree to tree, have led to catastrophic damage to some trees during severe desert freezes. Like all Variety ‘AZT™’ selections, Acacia smallii, ‘AZT™’ is propagated from cuttings (cloned) and is the product of an extensive screening process that begins with horticultural qualities, like cold hardiness, rooting characteristics and overall durability. Once these qualities are identified, we look for potential Mother trees whose physical appearance reflects the natural beauty that have made Sweet Acacia a landscape staple in desert landscapes. Acacia smallii ‘AZT™’ consistently exhibits cold hardiness down to 15-20 degrees F.

Cercidium/Parkinsonia microphyllum
Foothill Palo Verde
The curved, gnarled trunks give Foothill Palo Verde a sculptural quality. They are often used at entry monuments, as focal point single specimens. They can also be used as transition trees back to native desert, as perimeter plantings or as a component of a mixed desert planting. While trees can survive on rainfall, monthly irrigations make for a more lush appearance. As with Ironwoods, Foothills will not tolerate over irrigation.

Pithecellobium flexicaule (Ebonopsis ebano)
Texas Ebony
Texas Ebony is almost too green to be a desert tree. Trees are highly drought tolerant, slow growing, moderately cold hardy to 25 F. Leaves are made-up of clusters of shiny, dark green leaflets. Branches are spined and zigzag at each node. Branches are usually dense resulting in a thick canopy that casts dense shade. Thorns and dense branching makes this an ideal security screen planting. It is used as an accent tree with its striking dark green leaf color, smoky grey bark and semi deciduous growth habit.
