Large Desert Landscape Trees
Prosopis glandulosa thornless ‘AZT’,
‘AZT’ Thornless Honey Mesquite
‘AZT™’ Thornless Honey Mesquites are unique among desert landscape species with its willow-like appearance, its delicate leaf canopy and grayish sculptural trunks. Weeping leaf and branching structure gives the tree an appearance similar to California pepper. The leaf canopy is spreading and lacy providing ample filtered shade that supports the growth and flowering of understory plantings. They are hardy to 0 degrees F. making ideal landscape trees in areas (like southern Nevada).

Prosopis thornless hybrid ‘AZT’,
‘AZT’ Thornless Hybrid Mesquite
The characteristics that set this ‘AZT™’ clones apart from seed selections are the absence of thorns, uniform upright growth, synchronous bud break and, with sound horticultural practices, root mass growth that is in proportion to canopy growth. The shade produced can range from filtered to quite dense. Shade is a welcome addition to all desert landscapes but may inhibit the growth and flower production of under-story plantings. Adapted to nearly all landscape applications, locations and soils.

Prosopis Seedless hybrid ‘AZT’,
‘AZT’ Seedless Hybrid Mesquite
The Prosopis Seedless Hybrid ‘AZT™’ has a very limited number of flowers and their associated pollen. Trees are free of seedpods (seedless), have uniform growth, synchronous bud break and, with sound horticultural practices, root mass growth that is in proportion to leaf canopy growth. Its upright growth habit requires less pruning than commercially produced Prosopis species. Seedless Mesquites are ideal for areas where tree litter is a nuisance to pedestrians and general site maintenance.

Acacia smallii ‘AZT’,
‘AZT’ Sweet Acacia
Acacia smallii ‘AZT™’, leaves are made up of 10 to 20 pairs of tiny oval leaflets giving the leaf canopy a delicate, fern-like appearance. In warmer winters or in certain microclimates trees may retain a majority of the leaf canopy. Leaves are shed in spring with the resumption of growth. Acacia smallii ‘AZT™’ is one of the first desert trees to bloom. The bloom period varies somewhat depending on winter low temperatures. Flowers appear from February until approximately April.

Cercidium hybrid ‘AZT’,
‘AZT’ Thornless Palo Verde
Cercidium Hybrid ‘AZT™’ has qualities found in Sonoran, Blue and Mexican Palo Verde. Like Palo Brea, branches are smooth and dark green as they mature. Bright yellow flowers are abundant in spring and intermittent during the summer months. It can be used as an accent tree, a focal point, along street and parking medians, single specimens or application that requires a striking, thornless desert tree. The leaf canopy and intricate branching patterns produce lush yet filtered shade that allows understory plants to thrive and flower.

Cercidium hybrid ‘Desert Museum’,
‘Desert Museum’ Hybrid Palo Verde
In the70's Mark Dimmitt with the AZ Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) observed Blue Palo Verdes that exhibited qualities suggesting they were hybrids. He identified a thornless seedling that was superior to the others and named it 'Desert Museum.' It flowers from mid-March, into late spring, early summer and again in late summer/fall. The v-shaped form, thornless growth and ample shade make it pedestrian friendly, a tree that can be used in almost any landscape application.
