Foothill Palo Verde
The curved, gnarled trunks give Foothill Palo Verde a sculptural quality. They are often used at entry monuments, as focal point single specimens. They can also be used as transition trees back to native desert, as perimeter plantings or as a component of a mixed desert planting. While trees can survive on rainfall, monthly irrigations make for a more lush appearance. As with Ironwoods, Foothills will not tolerate over irrigation.

Pithecellobium flexicaule (Ebonopsis ebano)
Texas Ebony
Texas Ebony are almost too green to be a desert tree. Trees are highly drought tolerant, slow growing, moderately cold hardy to 25 F. Leaves are made-up of clusters of shiny, dark green leaflets. Branches are spined and zig-zag at each node. Branches are usually dense resulting in a thick canopy that casts dense shade. Thorns and dense branching makes this an ideal security screen plantings. It is used as an accent tree with its striking dark green leaf color, smoky grey bark and semi deciduous growth habit.

Texas Mountain Laurel are well adapted to high temperatures, well drained, alkaline soils and full sun, and is used in desert landscapes as a flowering, evergreen shrub. The form is usually low branching or multiple trunked with a dispersed to fairly dense canopy of glossy green leaves. Sophora can be used as individual flowering shrubs, in groupings to exploit the glossy green foliage, purple flowers and remarkable fragrance or as a screen or hedge planting.
